Louis le Brocquy

Louis Le Brocquy, born in 1916 and still alive today, is one of the great modern Irish painters. He was self-taught and well known for his paintings of literary figures and fellow artists, including W.B. Yeats, James Joyce and his friends Samuel Beckett, Francis Bacon, Seamus Heaney and Bono.
His early work, from around 1935-1949 are my favorites....

These are beautiful, but I have always loved his ghostly portrait paintings of writers and artists. They are so subtle and eerie, but stunningly beautiful also.
